Ongoing 'Mohamed Mahmoud' clashes force temporary closure of American University in Cairo's Tahrir campus

The American University in Cairo (AUC) on Tuesday temporarily closed its Tahrir campus due to ongoing clashes between protesters and Central Security Forces (CSF).

Protesters commemorating the anniversary of last year's Mohamed Mahmoud Street clashes began fighting with security forces on Monday evening.

Rehab Saad, media associate at AUC, said the decision was standard procedure and had been applied on similar occasions since the revolution.

Saad said the closure would not apply to the university's New Cairo campus.

The AUC did not say when the campus would reopen.

Veteran Egyptian journalist Mohammed Hassanein Haikal is due to deliver a lecture at the Tahrir campus on Saturday.
