South Africa's top metalworkers union has urged its 220,000 members to go on strike for higher wages from Tuesday, days after platinum mineworkers called off a five-month stoppage.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) Deputy General Secretary Karl Cloete said Thursday the union's national executive committee had "agreed to the decision from our members to embark on an indefinite strike action, beginning on July 1, 2014."
