A Tunisian court on Thursday sentenced two policemen to 15 years in jail for the rape of a young woman, in an appeal which more than doubled the initial penalty.

Monia Bousselmi, a lawyer for the victim, hailed the ruling as "a great step" forward for such cases in the Muslim country.

The two policemen had been handed seven-year sentences in March for the 2012 rape, drawing accusations of leniency in the case, which had captured international attention for the victim.
