Secular Nidaa Tounes party head Beji Caid Essebsi, 87, came top in Tunisia's presidential election on Sunday but will probably need to contest a runoff, his campaign manager said.
Essebsi, "according to preliminary estimates, is ahead and has a large lead", Mohsen Marzouk told reporters.
He said the Nidaa Tounes chief fell "not far short" of the absolute majority needed to win outright, but that a second round in late December was likely. He did not say which candidate was running second.
