Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini arrived Tuesday in the Libyan rebel stronghold of Benghazi, where he is expected to open a new consulate, an AFP correspondent said.

Frattini is scheduled to inaugurate the consulate at noon (1000 GMT) after holding a joint news conference with Mustafa Abdul Jalil, the head of the rebels' National Transitional Council.

Italy, the former colonial ruler of Libya and strategic economic partner with Moamer Kadhafi's regime, has joined international calls led by Britain, France and the United States for the Libyan leader to go.
