Al-Assad regime sets date for parliamentary poll under new constitution at 7 May, while Syrian rebels continue to call for president's ouster

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, facing a year-old rebellion against his rule, has set parliamentary elections under the country's new constitution for 7 May, the Syrian parliament's website said.

A constitution that allows for political pluralism was approved via popular referendum in February. But those who have joined the anti-Assad uprising say the new national charter is illegitimate, insisting that the president must step down.
