An Omani government official says the military has deployed troops north of the capital, Muscat, near the border with the United Arab Emirates after unrest spread to this Gulf nation.
The official says the army also deployed light equipment on Tuesday, anticipating more anti-government protests that have included deadly clashes in the port town of Sohar.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to release information to the media.
Police killed one protester in Sohar on Saturday. Hundreds have rallied in the town's main roundabout demanding higher salaries, jobs for unemployed youth and the dismissal of some government ministers.
A rally in support of Oman's long-serving ruler is planned for later on Tuesday in Muscat.
