Some 1,500 rebels from Democratic Republic of Congo's M23 insurgents have surrendered to Uganda, thought to be the bulk of the fighting force, a Ugandan army spokesman said Thursday.

"About 1,500 fighters surrendered today," said Paddy Ankunda, spokesman for Defence Minister Crispus Kiyonga, who is mediating the M23-government peace talks. However, Ankunda said he was "not aware" if M23 rebel chief Sultani Makenga was among those to have surrendered.
