Syria said Tuesday that it supported "any international effort" to combat jihadists, hours after a US-led coalition launched strikes against the Islamic State (IS) group in the war-torn country.

Syria "backs any international effort that contributes to the fight against terrorists, be it against... IS, (Al-Qaeda affiliate) Al-Nusra Front or anyone else," the foreign ministry said in a televised statement.
