14 diplomats loyal to Gaddafi are expelled from France Friday

France expelled 14 Libyan diplomats on Friday due to their loyalty to the government of Muammar Gaddafi, the French foreign ministry said.

"The decision (to expel them) was taken some time ago, but there was a process to follow," said a French diplomat, who asked not to be named. "Many of these people were using their status as diplomats as a cover."

France and Britain are pressing to toughen a NATO bombing campaign against troops loyal to Muammar Gaddafi as part of a U.N.-mandated effort to protect Libyan civilians.

In a statement, the ministry said the diplomats were "persona non grata" and given between 24 and 48 hours to leave the country.
