In an interview with BBC Arabic on Thursday, renowned Hollywood actor George Clooney expressed his grave concerns over the crisis in Syria.

Clooney said that the ongoing conflict developed into a complex civil-war since protests erupted against Bashar Al-Assad four years ago, adding that he intends to help refugees and victims from the country.

Commenting on how much more involved he is in the Syrian crisis now, the actor said that they are working step by step even though its complicated.

"The crisis in Syria is very complicated at the moment. We look to the state as a whole. Bashar, who we are trying to isolate, is also fighting the Islamic state group. Whenever I see what is going on in Syria, I am reminded that the situation is alarming. I am not a politician and I do not make policies, but what I can do and what we can focus on is individuals and refugees," Clooney stated.

The 54 year old also denied his intention to formally get involved in politics, adding that his marriage to Lebanese human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin has given him a new perspective on the Middle East.

Clooney said while they are both equally immersed in politics, they don’t work in the field. However, he said that they are both engaged with political issues and politicians.

He also said that he feels that he is in a better place by not being formally involved in politics, as he is able to do more by reaching compromises or middle grounds.

Clooney added that his father's experience while running for the congress made him realise how difficult it is for politicians to reach compromises. He closely watched the process and realised it was very difficult for his father, even though he was only a member of Congress for two years.

He also explained that because he hasn't become formally involved in politics, he has been able to be outspoken and frank about the situation in Darfur and South Sudan.

"Terrible things are happening there, I'm not worried about our relations in Sudan. I'm not worried about upsetting a group of people. I was able to address these issues and defend them and make them audible as much as possible," Clooney said.

Clooney said that his new wife has contributed to deepening his understanding of Lebanese culture, though clarified that he was not narrow-minded before he met her.

"I even remember that I was labelled as a traitor during the Bush administration because I was against the war in Iraq. I was against launching a war on a country for no reason at all," Clooney said.

He explained how he learnt a lot from Amal about the great Lebanese culture, also saying they are planning on visiting Beirut, which he is very excited about.

"I did not know much about Lebanese culture and how many members of my family are there - which I think number about a thousand. This is a good thing and I'm looking forward to going there. I would like to surprise some relatives with the visit," Clooney said.
