US President Barack Obama on Saturday called for an end to the 19-month-old civil war in South Sudan, urging the country's warring leaders "put their country first".

"The situation is dire. We agree that the best way to stop the fighting is for South Sudanese leaders to put their country first with a peace agreement that ends the fighting," he told reporters after talks with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
