Algeria's government has spoken out for the first time against violence in Syria, calling for political reforms and an end to the crackdown on a popular revolt.
Algerian Foreign Ministry spokesman Amar Belani says "we can only deplore the violence and urge the parties in Syria to let wisdom and an inclusive, national dialogue prevail."
Belani stressed the need to "preserve security and stability in this brother country that plays an important role in the region."
Algeria, which saw a series of protests earlier this year, has been cautious in criticizing other Arab governments confronted with popular uprisings.
Syria's government is coming under increasing international pressure to end the deadly government crackdown.
