The Palestinian leadership has not yet decided whether to seek full membership of the United Nations next week, the Palestinian envoy to the UN said Thursday.
President Mahmud Abbas and other leaders will take a decision based on talks in recent days with US, European Union, Russian and other international envoys, ambassador Riyad Mansour told reporters.
"We will take all these issues for further discussion and deliberations by the Palestinian leadership and a final decision will be taken in the next few days as to which path we will follow," Mansour added.f
In a move which has infuriated Israel and led to a threat by the United States to veto any approach to the Security Council, the Palestinians have said they will seek full state membership of the UN or go to the General Assembly for enhanced observer membership.
Abbas is to speak to the UN General Assembly on September 23, but no meeting between Abbas and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has yet been confirmed. Abbas is to make a public statement on the bid on Friday.
"There are many words from many places but what I am telling you is that we are deliberating these details and it is not yet finalised. And once it is finalized it will be announced. What is really clear is that we have the right to join the community of nations as a full member."
"We are fine tuning our options and we will make the final decision soon," Mansour said. "After we decide that, we jump immediately into the technicalities of how it could be done and how it could be done in the fastest possible way."
