Kuwaiti authorities have increased the minimum salary requirements for new foreign workers who want to sponsor family members from KD250 to KD450, Egypt's foreign affairs ministry said in a Tuesday statement.

The new policy does not apply to those foreign workers already living in Kuwait with their families and earn less than KD450, the statement added.

The amendments excludes those working in a number of professions including judges, legal experts and researchers who work in governmental sectors, doctors, pharmacists, teachers in universities, colleges and higher institutions, plane pilots and flight attendants, engineers, journalists, media correspondents, mosque preachers and nurses, among others.

The oil-rich country has a population of 4.2 million - 2.9 million foreigners, mostly from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Egypt and Syria, and a minority of 1.3 million natives.
