Iraqi president calls for easing regional tensions, combating terrorism

Salih stressed the need for concerted regional and international efforts to combat terrorism and extremism, and to reduce tensions that negatively affect development and prosperity in the region

Iraqi President Barham Salih called on Thursday for easing tensions in the region, as well as cooperation to combat terrorism and extremism.

Salih made the comment during his meeting with Russian ambassador to Iraq Maxim Maximov in the presidential palace, where the two reviewed the latest developments on the regional and international arenas, affirming their commitment to dialogue to enhance regional security and peace, according to a statement issued by the Presidency office.

Salih stressed "the need for concerted regional and international efforts to combat terrorism and extremism, and to reduce tensions that negatively affect development and prosperity in the region," the statement said.

Salih and Maximov also "discussed means to strengthen bilateral relations and expand horizons of cooperation to serve the interests of both countries," the statement added.

For his part, Maximov renewed his country's support for Iraq and the desire to strengthen ties in all fields, and to expand economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries, it added.
