Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz appeared on television from his hospital bed on Sunday after being wounded in what the government said was an accidental army shooting of his convoy.

"I want to reassure the citizens of Mauritania that the operation I underwent yesterday (Saturday) evening was a success thanks to the efficiency of the medical team that carried it out," he said shortly before he was flown to Paris for further treatment.
