An Israeli army officer has died in a friendly-fire incident involving other soldiers near the Gaza Strip, an army spokesman said Tuesday.

The officer had been taking part in a "routine operation" in the sector adjacent to the security barrier separating Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, the spokesman said.

He gave no more details but added that an enquiry has been opened.
