Hungary's first democratically elected president Arpad Goncz has died aged 93, state news agency MTI reported Tuesday.

One of Hungary's leading political figures in the first decade after the transition from communism in 1990, Goncz served as president between 1990 and 2000.

A prominent writer and political dissident during the central European country's communist period, Goncz was sentenced to life in jail in 1957 after the failed anti-Soviet uprising the year before, but was released under an amnesty in 1963.
