The North's official Korean Central News Agency said Sunday that local assembly elections began across the country as songs reverberated and flags fluttered over polling stations crowded by voters.
The elections last happened four years ago. They're taking place as the North tries to bolster the political position of Kim Jong Il's youngest son, Kim Jong Un, as successor.
Kim Jong Un was unveiled as a four-star general ahead of a major ruling party convention last September. He is believed to be in his late 20s.
