British police say 12 men have been arrested in early morning raids on three cities over a suspected UK terrorism plot.
Assistant Commissioner John Yates, Britain's lead officer for counterterrorism, said on Monday that the suspects were detained in London, in the central English city of Stoke-on-Trent and also in Cardiff, Wales.
He said the suspects will be questioned on suspicion of preparing acts of terrorism and said the arrests were necessary to ensure public safety. He did not disclose details of the alleged plot.
Yates said the arrests followed a large scale, pre-planned operation using officers from several different cities.
