Top Brexit campaigner and former London mayor Boris Johnson said Thursday he will not stand to succeed Prime Minister David Cameron, as had been widely expected after Britain's vote to leave the European Union.

"Having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances in parliament, I've concluded that person cannot be me," he said in a speech in central London.
