Netherlands heatwave smashes 75-year record with 38.8 C

The Netherlands experienced its hottest day on record on Wednesday, with the mercury soaring to 38.8 degrees Celsius, as Europe sweltered in a heatwave.

The temperature measured at Gilze-Rijen in the south smashed a 75-year record of 38.6 degrees Celsius from 1944, the Dutch Meteorological Institute said.
