French forces around the north Mali town of Gao were coming under "sporadic" attack in "harassment operations" by Islamists on Saturday after seizing the airport and a key bridge, the army high command told AFP.
A spokesman said there was no fighting "strictly speaking" in the northeastern region of the war-torn state but the Islamist fighters were firing "sporadically" at French positions "after taking shelter in urban areas."
