Egypt’s Suez Canal revenues rose 8.9 percent to $442.4 million in April as compared to the same month a year earlier when the canal collected $406.1 million in revenues, according to a government website for state information.
Last week, head of the Suez Canal Mohab Mamesh announced that a new record had been set regarding the size of transported cargo, with 59 ships carrying 3.7 million tons of cargo in a single day.
The world's largest container ship, carrying 200,000 tons, passed through the canal on Saturday from Morocco on its way to Malaysia, added Mamesh.
The Suez Canal is one of Egypt's main sources of foreign currency.
