General Electric is delivering 1.84 gigawatts of electricity to Egypt's national grid out of a planned 2.6 gigawatts, as part of the country's programme to boost power generation, according to a company statement.

Egypt is trying to recover from its worst energy crisis in decades, coming off the back of increasing consumption and fuel shortages.

The American multinational was scheduled to complete a project that would add the 2.6 gigawatts to the grid in May, according to the initial announcement of the deal, but will probably reach that number by August, Yehia Shankir, director of business development for renewables at GE’s sub-contractor El-Sewedy Electric told Ahram Online in May.

"This is one of the fastest power projects ever delivered by GE worldwide, which is a testament to our continuous efforts to work with and support Egypt’s government and our customers.” Steve Bolze, President and CEO of GE Power & Water, said in the statement.

GE announced in March during Egypt's Economic Conference that it plans to invest $200 million in a manufacturing and training facility in Egypt's Suez City.
