Doha Cables has been awarded a 1.8 billion riyal ($494 million), contract by Qatar General Electricity & Water Corp (Kahramaa), the company said on Wednesday, as the Gulf Arab state tries to meet rapidly growing power demand.

Doha Cables is to double its production capacity from a current 40,000 tonnes of copper annually to fulfill the contract to supply low and medium voltage power cables, a company statement said.

Doha cables is a subsidiary of Senyar Industries, a 50-50 joint venture between Qatar's Aamal Holding and Egypt's El Sewedy Electric, the largest Arab cable maker.

The contract is part of a programme to meet growing demand for power in Qatar, which Kahramaa forecasts will almost double to 8 gigawatts by 2013, the statement said.
