Former Egyptian prime minister Ahmed Nazif was handed a three-year prison sentence on Thursday after being found guilty of using his political authority to boost his wealth.

Nazif, who led Egypt's cabinet between 2004 and 2011, was also fined LE9 million ($1.5 million). His two sons, Sherif and Khaled, were also fined.

The former PM was arrested and investigated on graft charges shortly after Egypt's popular uprising prompted the resignation of ex-president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.
