Workers at Ain Sukhna Port staged a sit-in in solidarity with seven of their colleagues allegedly unjustly layed-off by DP World's management.

The Dubai-based DP World currently manages Ain Sukhna Port.

"All the previously dismissed workers had a record of violations, and were dismissed according to the law. There is currently a legal dispute between the workers and the port's management; however, we are ready to talk to any of the dismissed workers that claim to have financial dues," said Ayman Badawi, commercial manager at DP World.

Officials at the seaport confirmed that the sit-in has not affected navigation and operations are at full capacity, indicating that the sit-in is staged outside working shifts.

The independent workers syndicate for its part announced that there is no alternative to the reappointment of the seven dismissed workers, claiming that the Suez labour directorate saw the discharges as "illegal."

The Dubai-based company denied intending to lay-off another group of workers due to financial problems.

"DP World's management denies all rumours that the company is planning to dismiss workers due to budget constraints, and we ask all workers to resume their work," explained Badawi.
