Kenya's Kituyi nominated to head UNCTAD

Former Kenyan commerce and industry minister put forward to head up UNCTAD from September

Former Kenya MP Mukhisa Kituyi has been put forward to serve as the new secretary-general of United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) for a four years term beginning 1 September 2013.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon nominated Kituyi, UNCTAD said in statement Thursday.

Kituyi is a former member of the Kenyan parliament and a former minister of commerce and industry in Kenya.

The nomination will go to the UN General Assembly for confirmation.

If confirmed, Mr Kituyi will succeed Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand, who assumed the post on 1 September 2005 and was reappointed in 2009. 

Mr Supachai will conclude his second four-year term on 31 August.
