Voting results for Egyptians residing abroad will not be announced at Egyptian embassies, according to embassy officials abroad.

Egypt’s ambassador in Beirut, Mohamed Tawfik, announced on Monday that the voting results of Egyptians living abroad will be submitted to the Supreme Elections Committee, instead of being announced inside the embassies.

The process of tallying the votes has started inside embassies abroad, but the results will be submitted to Egypt’s elections committee to be announced in line with the results in Egypt, “so as not to affect the process of the elections [in Egypt],” Tawfik explains.

Egyptian expatriates were granted their voting rights following a lawsuit in October. Egypt’s ruling military council declared a new law in November which regulates expatriate voting in elections and referenda.

Voting for Egyptian expatriates started on Thursday, a few days before the first day of elections in the country on Monday 28 November.
