Presidential candidate Hisham El-Bastawisi has told Ahram Online that he will not begin his presidential campaign events as planned on Monday, the first day for legal campaigning, as "there is no money to begin the campaign."
El-Bastawisi said that his presidential campaign bank account "has zero balance."
He added that there are many meetings and conferences scheduled for him in different governorates; however, the agreements are still preliminary, and the financial resources of the leftist Tagammu party, of which he is the official candidate, are very weak.
El-Bastawisi is a prominent reformist judge and a well-known political figure who led democratic opposition to the Mubarak regime within the judiciary.
He played a key role in the struggle for judiciary independence in the last decade of Hosni Mubarak’s rule.
He announced his intention to run for the presidency in March 2011.
