Two Egyptian musicians perform at world music festival in Norwegian capital

Two Egyptian artists – electronic musician Maurice Louca and mahraganat pioneer Islam Chipsy – participated in the latest edition of the Oslo World Music Festival (OWMF), held in the Norwegian capital between 28 October and 2 November.

Chipsy mixes electronica with acoustic sounds on his keyboards. Recently he has transported Egypt's street music to stages across Europe.

Meanwhile, Louca rose to the scene in 2005 with the formation of Bikya, an electronic ensemble that also includes Mahmoud Refaat and Mahmoud Waly. In the last few years, the three musicians have also explored their solo careers. Performing widely across Cairo and Beirut, Louca uses a modulator, effect box, sampler and laptop to blend tracks recorded separately.

OWMF, which was established in 1994, presents music from around the world, with particular focus on Asia, Africa and Latin America. In recent years, a range of Egyptian musicians have performed as part of the festival, including Maryam Saleh and Ramy Essam.

Palestinian singer, songwriter and oud player Tamer Abou Ghazala and Syrian/Iraqi Khayam Allami have also participated in previous editions.
