Egypt's legendary film actor Omar Sharif was buried Sunday in Cairo following a funeral at Cairo's Mushir Tantawi Mosque in New Cairo. Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported
The funeral, which was held after noon prayers at the mosque, was attended by only son Tarek as well as several public figures, including several renowned actors and his friend Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, Ahram Arabic news website reported.
Sharif starred in more than 110 films in Egypt and worldwide in his career.
The actor was buried at El-Sayeda Nafisa Cemetery in southern Cairo.
Sharif was born in Alexandria in 1932 to Catholic Syrian-Lebanese parents who named him Michelle Chalhoub.
The actor converted to Islam when he married late renowned Egyptian actress Faten Hamma in 1955.
Omar Sharif had been suffering from Alzheimer’s for the past three years.
Sharif's international fame was guaranteed following his role in David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia (1962), for which he earned a best supporting actor in an Oscar nomination as well as a Golden Globe Award.
For his role in Dr Zhivago (1965), Sharif won a Golden Globe Award for best actor.
Sharif is one of the golden age heroes of Egyptian cinema for his films A Man in Our House (1961), A Love Rumour (1959), Struggle on the Nile (1959), The River of Love (1960), and many others.
