After a successful book signing event held at Kotob Khan late December, prominent filmmaker Mohamed Khan is scheduled to sign and discuss his latest book Mokhreg Aala Al-Tareeq (A Director on the Road) in Alef bookstore's Heliopolis branch on 17 January.

The discussion will be moderated by Emad El-Adly, head of cultural activity at Alef bookstores.

Published by Kotob Khan publishing house, the book comprises a selection of articles written by Khan between 1990 and 2014 and published in an array of newspapers such as Al-Hayat, Al-Qabas and Al-Tahrir.

The articles, according to Kotob Khan’s official Facebook page, "document the ebb and flow of cinema's stars, and cinematic and social trends and concepts since the beginning of Khan’s career in the 1960s and up until today."

As such, the book “sheds light on a number of important subjects including the issue of independent film production and its crises” and also “discusses the mechanisms of cinema in the ‘80s.”

Khan has been one of Egypt's leading film directors since the 1980s, making a string of movies tackling social issues that have often revolved around female central characters.

Born in Cairo in 1942, Khan was educated in Britain before beginning his film career in the Egyptian capital in the 1960s as a script writer.

He is one of Egypt’s most prominent directors belonging to a generation of neo-realist filmmakers that represented a hallmark in Egyptian cinema.

Three of his films — El-Harreef (The Street Player, 1984), Zawgat Ragol Mohem (The Wife of an Important Man, 1987) and Ahlam Hind wa Camilia (Dreams of Hind and Camilia, 1988) —were named among the "100 Greatest Arab Films of all time" by the Dubai International Film Festival.

Programme:
Sunday, 17 January, 7pm

Alef bookstore, 132 Merghany Street, Heliopolis, Cairo
