Art Alert: Ebn El-Balad’s folk music at Alexandria’s French Institute

Ebn El-Balad band will bring folk music to the French Institute in Alexandria on 19 January.

The band was founded in 2010, and released their debut album a year later, reviving Egyptian folk songs with a contemporary flavour.

In 2013, the band started their own music studio ‘Ebn El-Balad Studio.’

Their album Aghany El-Balad included songs as Koum El-Dekka and Baladi Ya Baladi.

In 2015, they produced a musical storytelling performance titled Tram El-Raml and with poetry by Mysara Salah.

The 14-member band is comprised of four main musicians, Muhammed Hosni, composer and singer, Roger Sami, lutenist, Ahmed Darwish, guitarist and Ahmed Khairy, percussionist, as well as 10 vocalists, Randa Adawy, Reham Yasser, Reem Soliman, Shams Ibrahim, Basant Salama, Sondos Mohammed, Kareem El-Ahmar, Tamer Ahmed, Mohamed Badran, and Rania Saleh who is also the band’s manager.

The concert is organized by the Alexandria-based B’sayra art agency, and is supported by Centre Rezodanse Egypte, the cultural centre for dance and performance art behind Nassim El-Raqs festival, and Careem, the international car-booking service.
