Syrian director Liwaa Yazji’s debut feature film Maskoon (Haunted) is due to screen at art-house cinema Zawya on 22 January, as part of Zawya's Sunday Screenings.
Haunted is a 2014 feature documentary about the experience of displacement during the Syrian war, and the life of uncertainty that follows. The film features several Syrians giving tours of their devastated homes, brought to ruins by the country's civil war.
Syrian filmmaker Liwaa Yazji was born in Moscow in 1977. She studied theatre in Damascus and went on to work as an actor and a playwright.
Yazji starred in Abdellatif Abdellhamid’s film September Rain in 2009, and worked as an assistant director in Allyth Hajjo and Ammar Alani’s docudrama Windows of the Soul in 2011.
Her first play, Here in the Garden, was published in 2012, and in 2013 she wrote the screenplay for the television series The Brothers, which was broadcast in several countries in the Arab world.
