Rango, a band composed of Egyptian and Sudanese musicians, will perform at El-Dammah Theatre on 8 June.

The concert revives the musical heritage of Sudan folk traditions, Zar music, including the rango, a wooden percussion instrument that looks like a rough-hewn xylophone.

The rango is almost extinct, played by just a few people, including Hassan Bergamon, one of the last four people in Egypt with the necessary training.

The band also features Essam Tutu on the simsimiya, a traditional plucked lyre.

Rango have performed in various cities across Egypt, as well as internationally, including at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark, WOMAD in England and WOMADelaide in Australia and New Zealand.

El-Mastaba Center for Egyptian Folk Music produced Rango’s first album in 2010, titled Bride of the Zar, in collaboration with the British production company, 30 IPS.
