Minister of Culture Shaker Abdel-Hamid has reached a settlement to end the protests at Alexandria Opera House (housed at the Sayed Darwish Theatre). A committee will be formed to examine the bonuses granted to workers at the Opera House and to consider other requests made by protestors with a one-month deadline.

After the 36-day sit-in, Abdel-Hamid has called the head of the sector to hold a meeting at his office. The meeting will be held in the presence protesters’ representatives, led by Mohamed Hamid, with the aim to review all their demands, understand and work towards normalising the distribution of bonuses, implementing a non-discriminatory treatment between workers in the Opera of Cairo and Alexandria and to implement employment law and other requests.

"Our [Alexandria Opera House] technicians are marginalised and whenever there is a visiting performance from Cairo, their technicians are paid to come and do the work, receiving bonuses and accommodation in Alexandria. We have employees who earn very little, while management is rewarded hundreds and thousands as bonuses for the activities held at the Alexandria Opera House," one of the protesters told Ahram Online.

"Several sectors at the opera do not have offices, desks or computers and employees are left to circulate around the corridors and the opera cafeteria unable to work."

Both parties agreed to end protests and return to work after demands were met. Abdel-Hamid also promised to pay some official visits to workers at the Opera House to discuss their problems and complaints to resolve them next week.
