Egyptian actress Mohsena Tawfik, who appeared in about 70 films, TV series and plays, died early on Tuesday at the age of 79.
Her most famous character in cinema is 'Baheya' in Youssef Shahin's The Sparrow.
Tawfik appeared in many of Shahin's films, including Alexandria... Why? and Goodbye, Bonaparte.
In addition to many important cinema appearances, such as Atef Salem's Les Miserables, Samir Seif's Dail El-Samakah, Atef El-Tayyeb's Night's Heart and The Piper, Tawfik is mainly known for many TV appearances, especially for the role of 'Anisa' in four seasons of Lialy El-Helmeya, in addition to El-Wessya, Um-Kulthoum and others.
Tawfik was born on 29 December 1939 and graduated from the faculty of agriculture in 1968 after she had already started her acting career in theater with A Beauty Tragedy in 1962 and Agamemnon in 1966 before appearing in the movie Honour Crime in 1971.
The winner of many awards, including 2013's State Appreciation Award in arts, was recently honoured during the third edition of the Aswan International Women Film Festival (AIWFF) in February.
She was the sister of Fadila Tawfiq, a famous presenter of children's radio programme Abla Fadila, and opera singer Yousra Tawfik.
She was also a mother of known journalist Wael Khalil and doctor Azza Khalil.
