Egyptian director Mohsen Helmy died on Wednesday morning after a struggle with illness, his wife, actress Salwa Aly, revealed on social media.
The funeral for the late director took place at noon the same day, with prayers held at the Sayeda Nafisa Mosque.
One of the leading theatre figures of his generation, Helmy is known for directing numerous theatre plays including Groom of the Sultan's Daughter, It Seems They Stole Abdo, A Good Man and A Liar, Thuraya's Children, and others.
Helmy was honored during the last edition of National Theatre Festival (2019) for his achievements in the theatre field.
Following Helmy's passing, the theatre community expressed their sorrow on their social media accounts, praising the artist for his skills and strong human values.
Nabil El-Halafawi, known for his roles in theatre, television and film, commented on Twitter: "And yet another great man of our times has left us. Mohsen Helmy, the well educated and bright director. May his soul rest in peace."
Numerous artists have expressed their condolences to Helmy's wife.
According to Aly, the wake will take place on Sunday at Amr Makram mosque.
