Coronavirus, Explained premiered on Netflix on Sunday. It is eighth on the list of top watched Netflix content in Egypt, just two days after its release.
The new series is part of Explained theme launched by Netflix in September 2019.
“In 2020, the world changed. This topical series examines the coronavirus pandemic, the efforts to combat it and ways to manage its mental health toll,” reads the synopsis of Coronavirus, Explained.
According to Netflix, the series will follow the coronavirus since its outbreak until it ends.
The first episode explains the origins of the virus as we know it and how it has developed so far, delving into the point where the coronavirus started affecting people on a global scale.
The episode is accompanied by a brief stating: “How did the coronavirus become a global pandemic, changing life as we know it? Experts and data provide a clear, informative overview of COVID-19.”
Among the featured experts is Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who since stepping down as Microsoft chairman, launched Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for scientific research. Gates has been also featured in The Next Pandemic, Explained, another episode in ‘Explained’ series.
Coronavirus, Explained is the third series released under Explained, produced by Vox and Netflix and launched in September 2019.
Prior to the topic of the coronavirus, Explained had released informative documentaries such as The Mind, Explained (September 2019), and Sex, Explained (January 2020).
Each series consists of one episode posted on a weekly basis, with a duration of 15-20 minutes. Each episode is voiced by a different narrator.
