Directed by Morad Mostafa, short film 'Henet Ward' will be screened in the Official Selection of the 26th Palm Springs International ShortFest, scheduled to take place online between 16 and 22 June.
Henet Ward talks about Halima, a Sudanese henna painter living in Egypt.
"She goes to one of Giza's neighbourhoods to prepare a bride for her wedding, and her seven-year-old daughter Ward accompanies her and starts to wander around and discover the place," reads the film's brief on IMDb.
Aside from directing, Mostafa also co-wrote the film's script (together with Mohamed Ali Mansour) and co-produced it (together with Sawsan Yusuf).
The 23-minute film stars Emad Goniem, Halima, and Hagar Mahmoud, among others.
Henet Ward received a Special Mention of the Jury at Akbank Film Festival, and is among 332 shorts that comprise the Official Selection of the 26th Palm Springs International ShortFest, chosen from more than 6,000 submissions. It is also the only film from Egypt in the Official Selection.
Born in 1988, Morad Mostafa has worked in the film industry since 2010, first as an assistant director to filmmakers like Hala Khalil (in Nawara), Sherif Elbendary (in Ali the Goat and Ibrahim), Ayten Amin, and Mohamed Diab.
This year, the festival will take place online with only a portion of the films screened for the public, available to stream for free June 16 through June 22.
Some of the films will be available for 24 hours.
"Some filmmakers were not able to make their films available to view for free online. Many filmmakers found themselves in a difficult position and we are fully supportive of those who were unable to share their films publicly at this time. All of these films were chosen because we believe they deserve to be recognised on their own merits, and many will become available to view in the near future via other platforms," says the Palm Springs International ShortFest’s website.
On Sunday 21 June 21, the winners of the festival will be announced. They will be presented with awards and cash prizes worth $25,000 including five Academy Award qualifying awards.
