Egyptian director Sameh Alaa
The Egyptian short film I Am Afraid to Forget Your Face, directed by Sameh Alaa, has been selected for the short film competition at the Cannes Festival in 2020.
"Happy to announce that our new short film will have its world premiere at the 73rd Festival de Cannes, as part of the Short Films Competition," Alaa said on Friday, thanking the festival and all his crew.
The cast includes Seif Eldin Hemida and Nourhan Ali Abdelazez and the crew includes producer Taymour, cinematographer Giorgos Valsamis, editor Yasser Azmy and sound designer Moataz AlQammari.
Many Arab and Egyptian filmmakers congratulated the crew of the film, which has been selected among 11 short films from 3,810 films from 137 different countries.
"The short films competition, which culminates in the jury awarding the Short Film Palme d’or, will take place next autumn at the Palais des festivals in Cannes. The exact date and the names of the jury members will be revealed very soon," the festival organisers said on Friday.
This competition is the only contest being held as part of the 73rd Cannes festival, which was cancelled this year for only the second time since 1939.
With 4,240 films watched in 2019, the short film prize was awarded to The Distance Between Us and the Sky by Vasilis Kekatos (Greece).
Egyptian film Souad was unveiled earlier as one of 56 films of the Cannes official selection, alongside other three other Arab films: Passion Simple by Danielle Arbid from Lebanon, Algerian-French production ADN (“DNA”) by Maïwenn, and the Lebanese film Broken Keys.
