Panorama of the European Film Festival

Returning to Egypt this fall is the Panorama of the European Film festival, now in its 9th edition.

 

Organised by Misr International Films in partnership with the European Union and Zawya, the festival runs from 2 November to 13 November.

 

Panorama is presided over by Marianne Khoury, with artistic director Stephanie Sicard.

Mahmut, a photographer who is haunted by the feeling that the gap between his ideals and his real life is growing, finds himself obliged to put up Yusuf in his apartment, a young relative who has left behind his village looking for a job aboard a ship in Istanbul to go abroad.

ADIEU BONAPARTE (France, Egypt) - Panorama Classics

In 1978, Napoleon lands his army in Egypt, defeats the Mameluke warlords, and goes to Cairo. Three brothers, fervent Egyptian patriots, reject the prospect of the French domination. Bakr, the eldest, is a hothead, quick to advocate armed rebellion; Ali is more philosophical and poetic while Yehia is young and impressionable. One of Bonaparte’s generals, Caffarelli, a scientist and a humanist, makes friends with two of them, Aly and Yehia. While the resistance fighters set against the bloody oppression, Caffarelli, leaves all warlike concerns behind and rebels himself Bonaparte’s destructive conquests.

As a female rapper in conservative Iran, Sonita’s talents are a liability. But the young refugee from Afghanistan insists on dreaming big. Her beats are as solid as stones and her rhymes are fierce. For the time being, her only fans are the other teenage girls in a Tehran shelter. There, she gets counseling for the traumas she has suffered and guidance in shaping her future. All the while, Sonita’s mother insists she must be married off soon, at a price, and threatens to derail her life at its most critical juncture.

Claus Pedersen, a Danish army commander in Afghanistan, does his best to lead his men with integrity and maintain their morale after one of their young comrades is killed by a landmine. During an unexpected siege, Claus makes a decision that will have consequences not only for him but for his family back in Denmark. He is faced with a moral dilemma while his wife Maria is trying to keep her family together in spite of the horrible thing that has happened.

Samir has given much of his time and money developing ski equipments for a Swedish Olympic athlete. When the contract fails, his business partner and closest friend plans to save their company by sending Samir to represent Algeria at the Winter Olympics. Already broke, and expecting his second child, Samir trains to become the first Algerian cross-country skiing male athlete to participate in the winter games. But he must first go back to Algeria, his father's homeland, in order to achieve this goal.

Surfacing from a pool, Dave gasps for air as he runs to a getaway vehicle — leaving his brother Kenny behind at the scene of a crime and speeding off into the night with Kenny's girlfriend, Sylvie. Four years later Kenneth is released from prison but much has changed. On the surface, it's all warm hugs, but tensions simmer underneath as Kenny tries to adapt to the idea of life in the straight lane, while Dave and Sylvie struggle to keep their relationship secret.
