Yoga lovers participating in the event at Al-Horriya Park
The Embassy of India in Cairo celebrated the 5th International Day of Yoga (IDY), at Al-Horriya Public Park, close to the Cairo Opera House in Zamalek, on 20 June.
The celebration started with a brief speech by Indian Ambassador to Egypt Rahul Kulshreshth, who thanked all yoga lovers for attending the occasion and expressed his gratitude to Cairo governorate for its kind cooperation in organising the event.
Later a demonstration of yoga as per the Common Yoga Protocol was presented, led by a yoga instructor from India. Various personalities who contributed to the spread of yoga in Egypt, along with the winners of the Yoga Photography Contest, were honoured.

Attending the celebration were Ambassador Kulshreshth, Deputy Cairo Governor General Mohamed Sultan, Ambassador of Thailand to Egypt Chainarong Keratiyutwong, together with a galaxy of Asian diplomats accredited in Cairo.
Around 3,000 yoga lovers from social clubs across Egypt took part, along with school children.

IDY events also took place in Ismailia at Nadi-El-Mawani grounds on 21 June and are scheduled to be held at Nadi Al-Minya Al-Riyadi (Al-Minya Sports Club) in Minya on 23 June.
The United Nations declared 21 June as International Day of Yoga after a resolution presented by India and co-sponsored by 177 countries, including Egypt.
Yoga is now recognised throughout world as a holistic discipline for physical, spiritual and mental well-being.
The IDY has helped people across the world to come together, celebrate, and experience the happiness of this ancient practice. Egypt has been celebrating the IDY with great enthusiasm, and many Egyptians have made yoga part of their daily lives.
The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) of the Embassy of India in Cairo offers regular yoga courses at different levels, starting from beginners to advanced levels.
In the run-up to the celebration of the 5th IDY in Egypt, MACIC observed a “Month of Yoga” from 20 May, with workshops, flash mobs and other outreach activities in cooperation with several government and private organisations.
