Ceramic artist Aida Abdel-Kareem dies at 89

Aida Abdel-Kareem, ceramic artist, died at the age of 89 on Sunday morning

The plastic arts scene is mourning the loss of Aida Abdel-Kareem, with head of sector Hamdy Abou-ElMaaty labeling her as a leading sculptor of ceramic and glass in Egypt and the region.

She was married to artist Zakaria Khonani.

Together, they started the Glass Art, Sculpture and Egyptian paste museum, located at Harrania village, which exhibits and presents artworks and the techniques used by artists handling glass and ceramics.

Abdel-Kareem’s contemporary work draws on Islamic, Coptic and ancient Egyptian heritage.

She was appointed head of Sculpture Department at Helwan University of Fine Arts, from which she had graduated from and also taught sculpturing at.

In addition to seven solo shows, her work is acquired in state collections, including the Egypt Modern Art Museum, the Museum of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Minia, as well as in the Fine Arts Museum in Budapest.

Abdel-Kareem’s funeral took place at the mosque near her museum in Harrania area at 11.30 am.

The wake will be held at Hamdeya El-Shazleya mosque in Mohandessin on Tuesday evening.
