Gypsum Gallery’s founder Aleya Hamza will curate a group show titled Complicity, to be held starting 19 January at Sultan Gallery in Kuwait.

Complicity will feature the work of seven established visual artists, Doa Aly, Shady Elnoshokaty, Nermine Hammam, Mahmoud Khaled, Jumana Manna, Setareh Shahbazi and Tamara Al-Samerraei.

The exhibit is inspired by a quote in artist and singer Patti Smith’s memoir titled Just Kids, in which she reflects on a 1975 portrait Robert Mapplethorpe shot for her album cover.

“Smith’s words suggest that artists are often present in their works even when they are not the subject,” the exhibition’s statement reads.

The works in Complicity are those in which “artist and subject are inextricably bound,” the statement continues.

The artists draw from personal stories, memories, vulnerabilities or intense experiences to create different forms of art through the several mediums- video, photography, photomontage, painting and drawing.
