Cairo's Mashrabia Gallery announced an upcoming Artist Talk by Egyptian artist Adel El-Siwi, in conversation with Yousry Nasr-Allah and Wael Abdel El-Fattah, on El-Siwi’s most recent body of work titled In the Presence of the Animal.
The exhibition -- currently on display at Mashrabia until Wednesday 31 May -- is comprised of 280 works, including paintings, assemblages, drawings and mono-prints, all rigorously selected among hundreds of the artist's pieces.
One of the most renowned Egyptian artists, El-Siwi was born in 1952 in the city of Beheira. While studying medicine at Cairo University from 1975 to 1976, he also enrollled at the faculty of fine arts between 1974 and 1975.
The artist lived and worked in Italy between 1980 and 1990, after which he returned to Cairo where he has been based ever since.
In addition to numerous solo exhibitions in Cairo and around the world, El-Siwi was featured at the the Cairo Biennale in 1996 and 2008, the Sharjah Biennial in 1997 and the Venice Biennale in 2009.
He was invited by Le Laboratoire: Sculpture Urbaine to project his artwork onto historical buildings in Brazil (1996), France (2000), and Algeria (2003).
Some of his notable group exhibitions include Rencontres Africaines at Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris; Modernities and Memories at the Venice Biennale; and Word into Art: Artists of Modern Middle East in Dubai, which was organised by the British Museum, Dubai (2008), among others.
The Artist Talk event will take place at Mashrabia Annex, an adjunct location to the gallery.
