Salesman wins top photo prize in EU Delegation competition

A salesman from Port Said has won the €1,000 first prize for his photo, “Move forward Egypt”, in the EU Delegation photo competition

Mohamed Kamal Mohamed Abdel Rahman, a salesman from Port Said, has won first prize in the "New Egypt" photography competition organised by the Delegation of the European Union to Egypt for his photo, "Move forward Egypt".

Second prize was awarded to Emad Karim, who won a digital SLR camera, while Muhamad Ahmed Jamal won the jury’s special mention.

An engineer, Mustafa Ahmed Abdel Atty, was awarded "The Mohammed Hassan Award”, a special new award established for the best photojournalistic effort in memory of the young photographer Mohammed Hassan, winner of the first photography competition, "Egypt: Life in a Picture", organised by the EU Delegation to Egypt. 

This was the fourth year that the EU Delegation to Egypt has organied a photography competition.

This year contestants were invited to capture the infectious and powerful spirit of the Egyptian people at this unique moment in their national history. The aim of the competition is to promote and stimulate creativity among amateur photographers in Egypt, and to give them an opportunity to showcase their work to a wide audience.

The jury, who selected the 30 best photos, was composed of a group of prominent professional photographers such Randa Shaath, photo editor of El Shourouk Al-Gadid newspaper, Khaled Desouki, photographer with AFP, as well as renowned photographers Xenia Nikolskaya and Thomas Hartwell.

The jury members also included art critic Dalia Chams, and representing the Delegation of the European Union to Egypt, Laura Garagnani.

The 30 best images will be publicly exhibited and will be included in a special catalogue of photo competition winners to be published by the EU Delegation.
